Weda reef & rainforest eco resort - Halmahera

Weda reef & rainforest eco resort / Halmahera

Weda Resort, on the east coast of central Halmahera, Moluccas, Indonesia, lies exactly between Lembeh strait and the islands of Raja Ampat.

Until recently, Weda Bay was a white spot on the world's diving map. Now 90% of our guests, who have dived in several places in Indonesia, think it is their best dive site ever.

Easy dives along steep coral-covered slopes, caves and large schools of fish. Or dive at shallow reefs, bays with seahorses and other critters. For the more adventurous divers an underwater island with the larger species of fish.

Weda Resort is close to a protected primeval forest full of (endemic) birds. Weda Resort makes every effort to minimize the environmental impact on Halmahera.

Except for diving, Halmahera is one of the most favorite destinations for bird-watching in Indonesia.

At Weda Resort you can watch birds in a comfortable way. From the terrace of your bungalow you can enjoy hornbills, eagles, cockatoos, parrots, fruit pigeons and other winged visitors.

After the discovery of a dancing-place of the Wallace Standard Wing Bird of Paradise (Semioptera Wallacii) we were very motivated to protect this piece against cutting down trees. We have succeeded in buying that place and the surrounding forest. In this 120-hectare primeval forest we have found 14 of the 28 endemic bird species of Central Halmahera. We were therefore very surprised to see that the Nicobar Pigeon also lives in this forest.
To reach the dancing-place of the bird of the birds of paradise a short journey of 20 minutes by car and a 20 minute walk must be made. If you want to walk the whole way, you can do that too. You need about 75 minutes for that. Together we have already found 24 of the 28 endemic species in a radius of 5 km around the resort.

Our very experienced English speaking guide is ready to help you find your favourite birds.

Our foundation Sawai Eko Wisata aims to protect nature and provide training.

At the moment the foundation has bought 700 hectares of primeval forest to protect, we provide clean water to the villagers, we have a kindergarten and we have built public toilets in the village. We work closely with various partners to protect the pristine and sensitive coral of Weda Bay.
