This tour module shows the heart of central Kalimantan. In these six days, we will take you to Tangkiling Mountain, sail in a motorized canoe up the Rungan River to spot the orangutans, visit the orangutan rehabilitation center Nyaru Menteng, visit the floating market of Banjarmasin, see the swimming carabao at the village of Pandak Daun lying on the water, make a rafting on a bamboo raft, make a jungle trek to Mount Meratus and spend the night in a longhouse in the Dayak village of Kepayang...

This tour module is an example trip and we can adjust or extend it if desired, for example with a visit to the islands in the Berau archipelago.

Day 1 Arrival Palangkaraya, panorama and a romantic sunset

Upon arrival at Palangkaraya airport, meeting service with your driver and guide. Transfer to hotel, check-in of the Hotel, refreshing and start if possible the trip by today in the afternoon, with visit to the Mount Tangkiling, which give us a nice view of Kalimantan ‘s emerald jungle landscape from the top. We close our day visits with a romantic sunset which we can view the best from the Tahai lake. Lunch and Dinner at Local Restaurant. Overnight at hotel Palangkaraya.

Day 2 Orang utans and strange birds

Breakfast at hotel, by car transfer to the harbor of Rungan River from where we take a canoe upstream Rungan river to the orangutan conservation area of islands, the Rungan river bank is covered with lowland forest, with lots of wildlife and birds, where we can spot the orangutans from the river side, Afterwards we return to Hotel, free at leisure, check-out of hotel and start our about 5 hours drive to Banjarmasin, on the way we will visit the orangutan Rehabilitation center Nyaru Menteng arboretum for information of the rehabilitation process of these wildlife creatures, which can only be found at Sumatra and Borneo Island. Lunch en route and dinner at local restaurant, overnight at hotel Banjarmasin.

Day 3 Floating market and swimming buffaloes

Early in the morning, we will visit the floating market of Banjarmasin as being part of Kalimantan ’s river-life, here we can explore the unique culture of Banjarese who trade commodities as fruit, and vegetables from boat to boat. Afterwards we return to the hotel for breakfast, canal trip through Banjarmasin, to see the river daily life of the local people, check-out of the Hotel, Lunch at local restaurant, by car/minibus transfer to Pandak Daun stilt build swamp village where we can observe the unique activity of the buffaloes farmers, during late afternoon when the water buffaloes swim return to the stall. We can enjoy the romantic sunset outlook over the swamp water-land, before we continue to Loksado for overnight at lodge.

Day 4 Bamboo raft, Meratus rain forest and overnight in a Dayak longhouse

Early Morning we have our breakfast at the Lodge, where a new adventure awaits, we will cruise downstream the Amadit River by a handmade Bamboo raft, crossing the beautiful landscape of tropical rain forest along the river bank to end up at Muara Hariang, where the car will wait us for the drive of about one hour to our start point to trek into the Mount Meratus rain forest for about 2 to 3 hours (upon field and sporty condition of tourists) to the Dayak village Kepayang in the mountain area, simple lunch (lunch box) en route, explore the daily life and activities of the Dayak, evening a local Dayak culinary dinner at Kepayang village. Overnight at Longhouse in Kepayang

Day 5 After jungle or culture back to the civilized world

Early Morning we have our local breakfast at the Longhouse, we can explore some jungle over the adventure trails around the village, or experience the local daily activities of the Dayak tribe in the village. Lunch with the locals in Kepayang village, before we say goodbye and trek towards the civilization area where the car will wait us for the drive to Banjarbaru for about 3 hours, Dinner at Local Restaurant, Overnight at Hotel Novotel Banjarbaru, close to Banjarmasin airport.

Day 6 Vertrek van Banjarmasin

After breakfast transfer to Banjarmasin airport for your next destination.

Dayak Longhouse - Kepayang

Deze accommodatie hebben wij zelf nog niet bezocht. De longhouse wordt ter plaatse 'Balai' genoemd en is een op palen gebouw houten huis, waar vaak wel 4 Dayakfamilies samenwonen. Palangkaraya

The town of Palangkaraya in central Kalimantan has little to offer the western tourist other than the nearby airport, as a base to the mountains and jungle around Loksado.

Banjarmasin

Banjarmasin is also called the Venice of Kalimantan. A big part of daily life takes place at the confluence of the rivers Martapura and Barito.

The floating market, the monkey islands and the diamond mines are definitely worth a 3-day visit to Banjarmasin.

Loksado

About a 4-hour drive from Banjarmasin is the mountain town of Loksado, on the flanks of Mount Gunung Meratus. Beautiful walks can be made on the mountain. From the Meratus you can make a rafting with a bamboo raft.

There are also a number of traditional Dayak villages in the area and at the village of Pandak Daun you can see how the water buffalo are familiar with the lake and swim to their stables in the afternoon.
